What about Lunch?

There are two ways—maybe more—to have lunch. One way is to begin lunch right after breakfast and keep eating until dinner. You need lots of energy on the trail, so eat plenty and often.

For munching on the trail, some people pack gorp (good old raisins and peanuts—with M&Ms tossed in, of course) in a resealable bag. Others bring along some cut-up cheese and salami or sausage sticks. (Cutting cheese or sausage in advance before they freeze is a good idea.) When everyone packs a different item, you can mix and match. If you choose this mobile method of eating lunch, make sure the foods you bring along are easily packed and are accessible.

The other way to have lunch is more relaxed: Find a place to stop that’s out of the wind and in the sun and that overlooks some scenic vista. If it’s cold, bundle up, start a stove, and make hot drinks. If you really want to do it right, build a small fire and relax on your sleeping pad. Take off your boots and socks and warm your toes. Dig into your pack and have a handful of gorp. Sharpen a stick and roast some sausage or pepperoni to bring out the flavor. Put a pot of water on and make tea or coffee or hot cocoa. What’s the rush? This is living!
